ABOUT HYCHOR
Green Hydrogen? Just Add Seawater
We develop electrochemical systems that produce green hydrogen directly from seawater, enabling deployment at coastal and remote sites without freshwater or centralised infrastructure.
Who we are
Hychor is a spin-out from the University of Aberdeen and an electrochemical R&D company focused on advancing green hydrogen technologies. We are developing a first-of-a-kind electrolysis system designed to produce off-grid hydrogen directly from seawater, minimising costs by reducing CAPEX and OPEX, as well as accessing cheap, direct renewable electricity.
Hychor’s approach is based on a patent-pending electrochemical process developed specifically for seawater operation, rather than adapting conventional electrolysers designed for purified water.
Our focus
Hydrogen production typically requires the co-location of freshwater, electricity, and supporting infrastructure, which limits deployment options and increases project resources and complexity. Hychor is addressing this constraint by enabling hydrogen generation directly at coastal and remote sites, using seawater and low-cost, locally available renewable power.
We collaborate with engineering and delivery partners to rapidly translate validated technology into deployable systems, while retaining focus on core electrochemical innovations and optimisation.
Technology approach
Hychor’s technology is built around electrochemical first principles and system-level design. By addressing seawater compatibility at the process level, we can rapidly scale-up using traditional electrolyser stack designs and simplify overall hydrogen production architectures.
By integrating a seawater battery in our two-stage solution, we support integration with intermittent renewable energy sources and off-grid applications, producing low-cost, on-site hydrogen.
Leadership
Hychor is led by a founding team combining electrochemical research expertise with engineering and operational delivery.
Dr. Jani Shibuya — Chief Executive Officer & Founder
Jani is the inventor of Hychor’s core electrochemical process. He holds a PhD in electrochemistry and is an Enterprise Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. He leads Hychor’s technical direction, strategic partnerships, and commercial development.
Alex Colledge — Chief Operating Officer & Co-Founder
Alex is a systems integration engineer with a background in operational delivery and complex engineering programmes. He leads operations, governance, and programme execution, with a focus on advancing Hychor’s technology towards integrated pilot-scale systems.
Looking ahead
Hychor is progressing its technology towards on-site demonstrators, working with industrial partners to prove performance in real-world operating environments. Our goal is to enable clean power in resource-constrained locations where freshwater access and centralised infrastructure are limited.
